George
Birrell studied at Glasgow School of Art in the late sixties
and early seventies. He lectured in Art & Design in Further
Education before becoming a full time artist. He has exhibited
widely throughout Scotland, including the RSA and Glasgow Institute,
also in London, Bath, the Cotswolds and in the USA.
Based
on the landscape of the East Coast of Scotland, his work shows
a strong interest in the specific architecture of the towns
and fishing villages of that area. The "hand of man"
is usually evident on his landscape.
His
work often includes the use of saturated oil colour, vigorous
handling and strong design.
