It
is not always what an artist sees which influences his work
most. It is more often what he or she feels.
'My
Town, My City' is a selection of work showing the wide variety
of ways that artists respond to a given town or city environment.
For example, Gerry Halpin and Michael Wood have produced two
totally opposite responses to the city of Manchester. Gerry
Halpin focuses on the colourful, bustling life of the city
whereas Michael Wood senses a much quieter, moody atmosphere.
Geoffrey
Key's powerful style captures the point where town and country
meet in 'Pennine Town'. Others in this selection have reacted
with humour as with John Thompson's 'Manchester cab' Bohuslav
Barlow's 'Skyline toms' with his own skewed view of Todmorden,
Lancashire in the background. Arthur Berry's response to his
midlands environment in 'Council tree' is humorous and at
the same time full of pathos.
Stockport
based Philip Harding's work is perhaps the most romantic;
touching briefly on the urban skyline but always looking upwards
to the skies for his inspiration.
