Judith Donaghy was born in Frodsham, Cheshire. She studied Textile Design at Stockport but later turned to painting, mainly working in oils on canvas. Blocks of colour often bold but at time subtle, are a frequent feature of her work. The paint is applied by palette knife and brush. Her landscapes are often divided into geometric shapes with more intricate, linear detail overlaying the basic composition.

Judith had her first solo show in 1990 at the Blythe Gallery in Manchester. Since then she has exhibited regularly throughout the North West.

Artist’s statement: “Painting is, for me, an instinctive process although direct observation is an important element. Small sketches and colour notes are made when out walking or visiting places of interest are usually the starting point for a painting which is later completed in the studio.

I tend to paint in blocks of colour using palette knives and brushes. Sometimes the painting may be quite formal with fairly precise lines and at other times the oil paint application is of a more fluent, impasto nature. Some paintings can also be more abstract than others, but blocks of colour and calligraphy feature in most of the work.
